The National Association of Pet Funeral Directors, N.A.P.F.D., was formed in 1996 by concerned industry leaders to address widespread fraud and deception within the Pet Funeral Industry. An example of such a crime is the Long Island Cemetery disaster in New York. Thousands of pets were "ditched", and their pet owners were charged hundreds of dollars for bogus private cremation and burial services. The cemetery owners were eventually found guilty of Mail Fraud because there were no laws regulating the disposition of deceased pets. Even though the cemetery was a member of good standing with an International Association and about to be recognized as one of this Association’s first "Approved" cemeteries, there were no controls, laws or regulations in place which could have prevented their outrageous and despicable operations. Eventually the state of New York passed pet cemetery legislation designed to regulate the industry and protect the consumer with New York.  It is a very good start but this legislation has not addressed the real the underlying situation that allows these types of facilities to operate to  the detriment of the pet owning public.

The N.A.P.F.D. has taken upon itself the task of regulating our members and standardizing their practices to insure uniform and dignified services. Since we have entered the 21st century our members realized that we have a special obligation and responsibility to the grieving pet owner, the general public, and our profession to protect all parties from unscrupulous practices of the past and evaluate our profession to a much higher level. To this end we dedicate our lives, our fortunes, and pledge our sacred honor.
